Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • vegetable oil, for frying
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Method
 

Donuts
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, apple cider, buttermilk, and melted butter.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  6. Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
  1. While the donuts are still warm, combine the sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  2. Roll each donut in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.

Notes

For best results, make sure your apple cider is reduced to concentrate the flavor. You can also use a donut pan for baked apple cider donuts if you prefer not to fry them.
