Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
- Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into thin, uniform rounds, about 1/8 inch thick.
Layering and Baking
- In a bowl, melt the butter and stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Arrange a single layer of sweet potato slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly.
- Brush a quarter of the butter mixture over the sweet potato layer.
- Repeat layering sweet potatoes and brushing with the butter mixture until all sweet potatoes are used, ending with a layer of butter mixture.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and, if desired, sprinkle with pecans and marshmallows, then bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the topping is golden brown.
Serving
- Let the layered sweet potato cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add a hint of orange zest to the butter mixture. Adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding more or less brown sugar.
