Preparation
- Rinse one cup of organic oat groats thoroughly under cool running water.
- Place the rinsed oat groats in a clean quart-sized jar and add four cups of filtered water.
- Cover the jar with a breathable mesh lid or cheesecloth secured with a rubber band, and let them soak for 8-12 hours at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
Sprouting Process
- After soaking, drain the water completely from the jar, rinse the groats with fresh water, and drain again.
- Invert the jar and prop it at an angle in a bowl or dish to allow excess water to drain and air to circulate.
- Rinse and drain the sprouts twice daily, in the morning and evening, for approximately 5-7 days.
- You'll observe tiny sprouts emerging from the oat groats, growing longer each day.
Harvesting and Storage
- Once the sprouts reach about 1/2 to 1 inch in length, they are ready for harvest.
- Give them a final rinse and spread them on a clean towel to air dry for a few hours.
- Store the dried sprouts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Notes
Ensure good air circulation to prevent mold. Adjust sprouting time based on desired sprout length and environmental conditions. Enjoy your fresh, homegrown oatmeal sprouts in salads, sandwiches, or smoothies!
