Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas soaked overnight
  • 1/2 medium onion chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • food processor
  • deep skillet or pot
  • slotted spoon
  • paper towels

Method

Prepare the Falafel Mixture
  1. Drain the soaked chickpeas thoroughly then combine them with onion, parsley, cilantro, garlic, flour, baking powder, and spices in a food processor.
  2. Pulse the ingredients until a coarse mixture forms, making sure it's not too smooth, and then refrigerate the mixture for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
Form and Fry the Falafel
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C) then scoop about 1 tablespoon of the mixture for each falafel and shape it into a small patty or ball.
  2. Carefully place the falafel into the hot oil, frying them in batches for 3-5 minutes until they are golden brown and cooked through.
Serve
  1. Remove the fried falafel with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  2. Serve the falafel warm with pita bread, tahini sauce, or your favorite additions.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the falafel mixture. Ensure the oil temperature is maintained to achieve a crispy exterior and fully cooked interior.
