Breadstick Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
Topping
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon dried oregano

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Baking sheet

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, and sugar; let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the flour and salt until a shaggy dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 30-60 minutes, or until doubled in size.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Divide the risen dough into five equal pieces and roll each into a 6-8 inch long breadstick shape.
  3. Arrange the breadsticks on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Finishing
  1. While breadsticks are baking, whisk together olive oil, garlic powder, and dried oregano.
  2. Once baked, brush the warm breadsticks with the seasoned olive oil mixture and serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle some grated Parmesan cheese on top of the breadsticks before baking, or add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the olive oil mixture for a subtle kick.
