Ingredients

For the "Soil" (Meat Sauce)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
For the "Seeds" (Cheese Mixture)
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese grated
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 0.5 cup parsley fresh, chopped
  • salt and pepper to taste
Other "Gardening" Supplies
  • 9 lasagna noodles oven-ready or cooked al dente

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • large bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • oven

Method

Planting the "Seeds"
  1. First, brown the ground beef in a large skillet and drain the fat, then add chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened.
  2. Next, stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, basil, salt, and pepper; simmer for 15 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine ricotta cheese, beaten egg, half of the Parmesan, half of the mozzarella, and chopped parsley, seasoning the mixture with salt and pepper.
  4. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish; then, arrange 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce, followed by a layer of the ricotta mixture and a layer of meat sauce.
  5. Repeat the layering process twice more, using 3 noodles, then ricotta, and then meat sauce.
  6. Cover the top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes, or until bubbly.
  7. Finally, remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving so that the layers can set.
