Planting
- Select a site with well-draining soil rich in organic matter and good air circulation, ensuring it receives 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Plant seeds ¼ to ½ inch deep and 18-24 inches apart in rows 30-36 inches apart, or start indoors 5-7 weeks before the last frost for transplanting.
Care & Maintenance
- Maintain consistent soil moisture by watering regularly, ensuring the soil is never waterlogged, and apply mulch to suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature.
- Fertilize every 2-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer, protect from pests and diseases, and blanch white varieties by tying outer leaves over the head when it reaches 2-3 inches.
Harvesting
- Harvest when the head is firm, white, and 6-8 inches in diameter, typically 60-90 days after planting, by cutting the main stem below the head.
- Monitor regularly as smaller side heads may develop after the main head is harvested.
Notes
Cauliflower thrives in cool weather; extreme heat can cause it to "bolt" or produce small, bitter heads. Blanching is crucial for white varieties to prevent discoloration.
