Preparation
- Wash and peel the potatoes, then cut them into roughly 1-inch cubes to ensure even cooking.
- Place the potato cubes in a large pot and cover them with cold water, adding a generous pinch of salt.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the potatoes are very tender, about 15-20 minutes.
Mashing
- Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly using a colander, making sure to remove as much water as possible.
- Return the hot, drained potatoes to the empty pot or transfer them to a large mixing bowl.
- Add the butter, milk, salt, and pepper to the potatoes.
- Using a potato masher or a fork, thoroughly mash the potatoes until they are smooth and creamy, without any lumps.
Finishing
- Taste the mashed potatoes and adjust seasoning with additional salt or pepper as needed.
- Serve the 5-star mashed potatoes immediately as a delicious side dish.
Notes
For extra fluffy mashed potatoes, warm the milk before adding it. You can also experiment with adding garlic powder or chives for additional flavor. Be careful not to over-mash the potatoes, as this can lead to a gummy texture.
