Preparation
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, then whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in warm milk until the sauce thickens, then stir in salt and pepper.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, pour half of the sauce over them, and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese, ensuring an even distribution.
Baking
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let the scalloped potatoes rest for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set.
Notes
For an extra rich flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the sauce. You can also experiment with different types of cheese, such as Gruyère or Parmesan, for a unique twist. Ensure potatoes are sliced uniformly for even cooking.
