  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Chocolate Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • two 9-inch round baking pans
  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • medium bowl
  • electric mixer

Method

Cake Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round baking pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together all the dry ingredients until well combined.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, warm water, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined and smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Frosting Preparation
  1. While the cake cools, beat the softened butter in a large bowl until creamy.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until smooth.
  3. Add the milk and vanilla extract, then beat until the frosting is light and fluffy.
Assembly
  1. Once the cake layers are completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake layer.
  2. Place the second cake layer on top, then frost the top and sides of the entire cake.

Notes

For best results, ensure all ingredients are at room temperature. Do not overmix the batter, as this can lead to a dry cake. You can substitute brewed coffee for the warm water for a deeper chocolate flavor.
