  • skillet
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • spatula
  • oven (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Mash the black beans in a large bowl, leaving some whole for texture.
  2. Combine the mashed beans with cooked brown rice, bread crumbs, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  3. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and the mixture holds together.
  4. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and form them into patties approximately 1 inch thick.
Cooking
  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat with a tablespoon of oil.
  2. Cook the patties for 5-7 minutes per side, or until golden brown and heated through.
  3. Alternatively, bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway.
Serving
  1. Toast the burger buns lightly if desired.
  2. Assemble the burgers on buns with lettuce, tomato, red onion, avocado, and your preferred sauce.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding smoked paprika or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the patty mixture. If the patties are too wet, add more bread crumbs; if too dry, add a splash of water or vegetable broth. These burgers can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or frozen for longer storage. Reheat in a skillet or oven until warmed through.
