Preparation
- Peel and cut the potatoes into 1-inch chunks to ensure even cooking.
- Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover with cold water by about an inch. Add a generous pinch of salt to the water.
Cooking
- Bring the water to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes thoroughly in a colander, shaking gently to remove excess water.
Mashing
- Return the drained potatoes to the empty pot or a large mixing bowl. Add the milk and butter.
- Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serving
- Serve the mashed potatoes hot as a side dish. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
For extra flavor, roast a head of garlic and mash it into the potatoes. You can also add a dollop of sour cream or cream cheese for an even richer texture. Adjust milk and butter amounts to achieve desired consistency. Do not overmix, or the potatoes can become gluey.
