Ingredients

Fritter Ingredients
  • 1 large onion
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • cup milk
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Medium bowl
  • Whisk
  • Large skillet or deep fryer
  • Tongs
  • Paper towels

Method

Preparation
  1. Thinly slice the onion and separate the rings.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then whisk in the milk.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just smooth.
  5. Dip each onion ring into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated.
Cooking
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  3. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Remove fritters and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  5. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of garlic powder or paprika to the batter. Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature for best results; too cool and the fritters will be greasy, too hot and they will burn quickly. These fritters are best served fresh and hot.
