  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/4 cup water or apple juice

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick wedges, then set them aside.
Cooking
  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced apples to the skillet and cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened.
  3. Sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt over the apples; stir to combine.
  4. Pour in the water or apple juice, bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-8 minutes until apples are tender and the sauce has thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or chopped pecans.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a splash of bourbon or rum during the last few minutes of cooking. This dish can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
