Method
Making the Dough
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast; let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in salt and vegetable oil into the yeast mixture.
- Gradually add 3 cups of flour, mixing until smooth, then add remaining flour slowly, kneading until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes until it's elastic and smooth.
First Rise
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat, then cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
Shaping and Second Rise
- Gently punch down the risen dough, divide it into three equal pieces, and shape each piece into a loaf.
- Place shaped loaves into greased 9x5 inch loaf pans, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes or until nearly doubled.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) during the last 15 minutes of the second rise.
- Bake the loaves for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and they sound hollow when tapped.
- Remove from pans immediately and cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Notes
Adjust flour amount as needed; the dough should be soft and slightly sticky but manageable. For extra flavor, brush the tops of the loaves with melted butter immediately after baking.
